Fall flowers that like shade

The Best Perennials for Shade

June 18, 2013 – 12:23 pm

One of the toughest plants in the shade garden, bigroot geranium (Geranium macrorrhizum) doesn't mind heat or drought. And, deer and rabbits typically pass it by in search of tastier morsels. This plant puts on a spring show with pink or white flowers; some varieties also offer outstanding fall coloration in their woodsy-scented foliage. Bigroot geranium is hardy in Zones 4-8 and grows 2 feet tall.

Top Picks: 'Album' offers white flowers; 'Ingwersen's Variety' offers clear pink flowers; 'Variegatum' has purple-pink flowers and white-variegated leaves.

Plant it with: Add height and interest to your shade garden by planting bigroot geranium in front of toad lilies.

Toad Lily

Put on a fall show with toad lily (Tricyrtis). This easy-to-grow perennial offers unique flowers that are often compared to orchids. Many are spotted with shades of purple or blue.

Top Picks: 'White Towers' bears white flowers; 'Tojen' offers especially large lavender flowers.

Plant it with: Let toad lily rise up behind a clump of medium-sized hostas or fern-leafed bleeding heart.

This topnotch groundcover is grown mainly for its foliage, but also has pretty flowers. Ajuga produces glossy, dark green leaves and springtime spikes of blue flowers. Select varieties offer dark purple or variegated foliage, or pink or white flowers. Ajuga grows best in Zones 3-9 and grows only 6 inches tall.

Ajuga can be a vigorous spreader; it's not the best choice for small spaces.

Top Picks: 'Golden Glow' has creamy-yellow edges; 'Black Scallop' offers shiny, dark purple leaves and fragrant blue flowers; 'Burgundy Glow' offers silvery-green leaves splashed with pink and burgundy; 'Chocolate Chip' offers smaller, purple-infused leaves.

Plant it with: Purple-leafed ajuga varieties look great against blue hostas.

Old-Fashioned Bleeding Heart

There's little wonder why old-fashioned bleeding heart (Dicentra spectabilis) is a shade-garden favorite. In late spring and early summer, it produces pink or white heart-shaped flowers that hang from elegant, arching stems. This top-notch plant is hardy in Zones 3-9 and grows up to 4 feet tall.

Reply to peony like flowers full sun-bush

I was looking through this thread and some of you arguing about peonies.
Come on people. If, you don't like peonies-PLANT SOMETHING ELSE. I grow twenty different kinds and they grow great for me with little care.
Getting back to the question of large peony like flowers, bushy plant, in full sun with absolutely no shade. IT SCREAMS ROSE BUSH TO ME.
The wisdom is, if you put the right plant in the right place, it will grow well with minimum care. To do well peonies need full sun-they will limp along in partial shade but will not bloom as well and will get gray mold

Southern cali (zone 10) plant/flowers for garden

I'd like to get a new plant for my parents front (full sun) or back (full, part sun, and shade) yards....since i haven't lived in Southern Cali in years i'm not sure what to get them! Any ideas? I'm looking for something that flowers mostly, or something that has pretty fall colors. I don't want them to have to work too hard to care for it. their anniversary is coming up, so i want to find something fun and pretty for them. thanks, all! :)

Some GREAT shade / container plants!

Here's some real beauties that i grow in containers in the shade:
red baneberry - actaea rubra - gorgeous, medium sized, nice leaf, bright red berries all winter.
california wild ginger - asarum caudatum - beautiful (sometimes shiny, sometimes blue-green) leaves, neat appearance, super cool unusual flower, ginger smell too!
goat's beard - aruncus dioicus - really beautiful plant that can grow fairly large if it has a large pot. nice, billowy leaves and white plumes of flowers. dies to ground in late summer/early fall. comes back beautifully w/ rains.
i also plant shady 'bog-pots' - pots w/ no drainage for beautiful bog plants like lysichiton americanum, lobelias, california pitcher plant (oops, this one is in the sun)

Shade-loving perennials?

I'm pretty new to gardening, just bought a new home fall 2003. I have an area that faces east so it only gets morning sun. I need something to plant in it, not sure which plants are best in shady areas. The mint sounds like a good idea, I'd also like to plant some colorful flowers. To rberke, I also live in Pontiac.

Care of bleeding hearts

I have had mine in a deep flowerbox in Manhattan for 5 years now. The original was a clump from my mothers; generally I would say that a rooted division (such as what Second-Season chopped up) bloom faster and do better than small tubers or mail order rootlet.
Care: bleeding hearts are woodland spring "emphemerals" plants, so they like moist, rich, composty soil in a shade or morning sun. (mine are on a north exposure). Clipping the flowers keeps them blooming for 2-3 months. When the weather gets hot the leaves turn yellow, fall off and the plant disappears. You have to remember where you put it, a labeled stake helps
